Tell us about your project — what problem were you tackling, and what did you build?

I developed a computational tool to optimize the guide RNA selection process for multiplex CRISPR-Cas9 arrays, where several genes are targeted at once. Multiplex editing opens up the potential to treat complex polygenic traits such as diabetes, and advancing this technology means safer therapeutics for patients.

Was there a moment, mentor, or connection at the Festival that changed things for you?

All of the people I met; the Festival connects you to other scientists your age who are doing wonderful things, and the selection of only around 50 champions makes it so you have the opportunity to connect with everyone on a much deeper level. NSF has introduced me to some of my lifelong friends, many of whom I still talk to today after over a year.

What’s happened since — where has your project or your journey gone? What’s next?

I’m an incoming freshman at Harvard College, broadly interested in biotechnology, data science, and finance. I had the opportunity to conduct research at a Harvard-affiliated lab before, and am excited to explore the campus as well as see some familiar faces on the research side. I look forward to continuing to build OMEGA or joining new ventures on campus.

What did being named a National STEM Champion mean to you?

Being a National STEM Champion was recognition of all the hard work I’ve put in over the past two years. Unlike other competitions, everyone who attends the National STEM Festival in Washington D.C. is already a winner; without the burden of competition, you are given the space to deeply connect with your peers, executives, and industry leaders.
